Described by another runner as the UTCT ‘Fun Run’ this 35km route can be anything but fun if you are not ready for it. With almost 2000m of climb it is a good introduction to ultra-distance trail running. It also is one of the iconic routes for a trail run – around and over Table Mountain, Cape Town.

The route starts in the Gardens suburb of Cape Town at a rugby club. After a brief piece of t@r you hit the trails and you won’t see t@r again until the end of the race. I ran the race with my trail buddy Rowan. We finished the race well ahead of cut-off.

Lessons I learnt running UTCT:

  • I can run further than I thought.
  • You can be totally knackered and 5min on your back can revive you
  • Watermelon at an aid station is the best ever – that and an ice bath leg rub
  • Table Mountain is beautiful
  • Nursery Ravin is steep!
  • Thank God for the streams – drink and cool down at each one!

Here are some pics from the race.
